In preparation for the Deepavali festival, to avoid any untoward incident, the Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai district police have made extensive security arrangements in key towns like Vellore, Arcot, Arakkonam, Ambur, Tiruvannamalai, Cheyyar and Vandavasi and have provided security to over 3,500 policemen.
On the orders of G. Dharmarajan, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Vellore, special security measures have been put in place, especially at public gathering places like markets, shopping areas and multiplexes in key cities to prevent petty crime, flow of traffic at busy junctions and major roads.
“Intensive checks are being carried out in trains and railway stations to ensure the safety of passengers and to prevent illegal transportation of biscuits,” Nikil Kumar Gupta, inspector, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Jolarpet, told The Hindu.
Law and Order, Crime, Traffic, Armed Reserves, Tamil Nadu Special Police and Home Guards personnel are on duty at designated busy spots in major towns and major villages in these districts.
Police said at least 85 vehicle check posts have been set up in these districts, including the border areas, to monitor the movement of vehicles. All district police headquarters have control rooms for monitoring closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera signals, tracking the movement of suspects and assisting in the search for missing persons.
Additional CCTV cameras have been installed at congested places in Vellore, Gudiyatham, Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Arakkonam and Tiruvannamalai town to monitor vehicular movement. Drone cameras have also been deployed in Tiruvannamalai town due to the increase in footfall at the Arunachaleswara Temple.
Police teams also use FRS (Face Recognition System) mobile application to identify known offenders with real-time coordination through WhatsApp groups. Four-wheeled and motorcycle vehicles are used to conduct frequent patrols.
Mobile x-ray baggage scanners are used to check baggage at key railway stations such as Katpadi, Arakkonam, Tiruvannamalai and Jolarpet. Female shoppers have been advised to wear headscarves to protect themselves from chain thieves, and headscarves are also being distributed in malls. Ambulances along with teams of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service have been deployed in major cities in case of emergency.
