More than 2,000 women from Prathabaramapuram Panchayat in the Keezhaiyur block in the Nagapattinam district sent a registered post of application requiring employment under the Mahatma Gandhi (MGNGA) employment law on Friday.
The mass campaign led by former President Panchayat RVS Sivaras is part of the growing dissatisfaction over what the inhabitants claim to be a deliberate delay in the allocation of work, attributed to the absence of elected representatives of the local authority.
“The registered worker has legal right to the required work within MGNGA and employment must be provided within 15 days. If not, the compensation must be paid as stipulated under the law,” he said.
Mr. Sivaras said that there were 2,159 registered staff in the village, each of which was claimed every year for 100 days of employment. While the village has usually noted 1.5 to 1.7 Lakh-day working days in recent years, only 1,725 people have been generated in previous years (2025-26) in the current financial year (2025-26).
“The absence of representatives of local organs has been hampered by the scheme since the end of the previous period. The community, especially the widow, the elderly and the economically vulnerable family, depends strongly on this program,” he added.
