
Pakistan, Karachi: More than 200 prisoners escaped from prison with high safety in the Pakistan port city of Karachi after the chaos followed by an earthquake in the nation, said the Minister on Tuesday.
Interior Minister Sindh Zia-Aul Hasan Lanjhar said that if prisoners voluntarily return, the government would consider a reduction in their sentences. He warned that those who were caught by the police would be tried under the laws against terrorism, PTI informed.
Hundreds of prisoners interrupted the door of their cells after they felt the trembling in Malir Jail in Karachi, which was hit on Monday by three earthquakes with low intensity, the police said.
As the prisoners escaped
After the trembling on Monday evening, the prisoners panicked and began to resort to violence to leave their cells, PTI reported.
Pakistan has recently been shaped by several earthquakes, and more than five of them were reported in May.
78 prisoners re -captured in 24 hours
Up to 216 prisoners escaped the prison, of which 78 prisoners were reopen in 24 hours, Lanjhar told the media.
He added that a dozen police and prisoners were injured in violence, while the prisoner was shot while trying to escape.
“Police officials tried to ensure their security and brought them from the cells, then some prisoners resorted to violence and escaped,” he added.
Malir Jail also houses more than 100 Indian prisoners, most of which poor fishermen serve the time for alleged illegal fishing in Pakistani waters.
The police officer said they were held in a separate barracks and stayed in their cells during the earthquake.
Previously, the prison superintendent Arshad Shah said that over 600 prisoners were excluded from their barracks during the earthquake, Geo TV informed.
The law enforcement authorities initiated a joint operation that monitored the remaining escapes.
The incident led to the release of IG prisons, prison and other high -ranking officials.
