More than 20 BRS members suspended from Telangana assembly for rest of monsoon session

More than 20 members of the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) have been expelled from the Telangana Assembly for the rest of the monsoon session.

Assembly Speaker G. Prasad Kumar announced the decision on a motion by Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu on Wednesday (September 9, 2026). The minister moved the motion amid a din created by BRS members who thronged the lectern and raised “we want justice” slogans.

Names of suspended BRS MLAs

BRS Deputy Floor Leader T. Harish Rao, its MLAs KT Rama Rao, G. Jagdishwar Reddy, P. Kaushik Reddy, Anil Kumar Jadhav, Kova Lakshmi, P. Sabita Indra Reddy, Sunita Lakshma Reddy, Ch. Prabhkar, K. Prabhakar Reddy, KP Vivekananda, T. Srinivas Yadav and K. Manik Rao were among those expelled from the House for the remainder of the session.

Why were the BRS members upset?

BRS members were agitated by the reported claims of some Congress legislators that they wanted to kill BRS President and Leader of Opposition K. Chandrasekhar Rao. BRS members led by Mr. Harish Rao raised slogans demanding a debate on the alleged remarks. BRS members carried placards in support of their demand and rushed into the Well of the House, some crowding the dais.

The chairman’s repeated appeals to the BRS members to return to their seats went in vain, even as minister Adluri Lakshman Kumar demanded a discussion on the “offensive” remarks made by the BRS MLC against the speaker. The minister cited the example of BRS leaders and cadres clearing the path of Congress leaders hailing from the Dalit community. He alleged that the BRS was continuing discriminatory practices and condescending behavior towards Dalits because of its “feudal mindset”.

Repeated appeals by Minister Sridhar Babu and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka went in vain as the BRS members remained adamant and remained in the Well of the House. Accusing BRS members of intimidating the chairman, Mr. Vikramarka claimed that “Dalits are not ready to bear more humiliation and insults”.

Mr. Sridhar Babu criticized the BRS members for not complying with the Speaker’s demand to come in proper form and seek redressal of their grievance. BRS members remained unaffected by the chairman’s request to submit a written complaint and tried to disrupt the meeting with their unruly behavior. “BRS members don’t want the House to function and that’s why they are creating a ruckus,” he claimed.

When the BRS members stuck to their post for more than half an hour, Mr. Sridhar Babu moved a motion to suspend the agitated members.
