A total of 1,789 students from the Chennai Regional Center of Indira Gandhi National Open University graduated from the 39th convocation on Tuesday.
Chennai Regional Center covers 19 districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal with 15 study centers.
Presenting the annual report of the regional center in Chennai, K. Panneerselvam, Senior Regional Director, IGNOU, said that about 210 programs are offered in the region, MA in Psychology, MA Political Science, MA in English, MA Sociology, BA General and B. Com are popular courses.
S. Vincent, Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council of Science and Technology, said the courses offered by IGNOU have contributed to the socio-economic development of the country, especially those living in rural areas. Tamil Nadu, he said, has become number one in scientific publications, patent applications and production of successful PhD candidates. IGNOU programs, added Dr. Vincent, have largely bridged the gap between town and country.
Earlier, the 39th convocation was inaugurated in New Delhi by the Vice President, CP Radhakrishnan, in the presence of Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Governor of Delhi and Uma Kanjilal, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU. The event was broadcast live simultaneously to 51 regional centers.
