The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will shut down the Moolamattom power plant of the Idukki hydroelectric power plant for a month for maintenance work. From November 11 to December 10, the power plant will not produce electricity. Moolamattom Power Station is the largest hydroelectric power station in the state.
“Fixing the leakage of the throttle valve and repairing the two main inlet valves of the plant will be started. The plant has to be shut down to complete the work,” official sources said.
“KSEB had earlier scheduled the work for July but postponed it after heavy rains in the catchment areas of Idukki dam. Shutting down the power plant would then lead to the opening of the dam gates as per the rule curve,” he said.
“KSEB generates maximum power during this period and shares it with Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, among others, on a barter basis. The power, including an additional 5%, will be returned in November, which will help manage the state’s power demand when the Moolamattom plant is closed for repairs. When the plant is closed, there will be almost a 60-60 MW shortfall at night.”
Repairs were scheduled for November based on the current forecast for that month. “The water level in the Idukki reservoir is now 2,385 feet and the November 20 rule curve is 2,400 feet. If the weather changes, the board will look for other options regarding the works,” he said.
The shutdown of the power plant would be reflected in a shortage of 3 MCM of water in the Malankara dam. “KSEB will work with the water authority to take measures to ensure water security in the area,” the official said.
“The repairs need to be completed urgently. If we fail to complete the work, the board will only be able to start the work in July next year,” he said.
