The violent shootout among competitors in the center of Montgomery left two people dead and 12 other injured on Saturday evening, the police confirmed. The three injured were hospitalized with life -threatening wounds.
Police chief James Graboys described the incident as “mass shooting”. He said the gunmen fired at each other in the middle of the crowded area of nightlife.
“There were two participating parties that basically shot at each other in the middle of the crowd,” Graboys told reporters.
“When they did it, they didn’t care about the people around them.”
The police responded around 23:30, but no arrest was arranged on Sunday morning. The authorities did not disclose details of the number of shooters or types of weapons used.
A busy weekend in Montgomery
The shooting took place during the wrapped weekend, which coincided with several events: the football match of the home film Alabama State University at the Hornet Stadium, the Alabama National Fair in Garrett Coliseum and Tuskegee University – Formohous College Football Rivalry in Cramton Bowl.
A police presence near the scene
Mayor Steven Reed said that officers were placed in 50 feet (15 meters) of both groups when the shooting began.
“The shooters had no consideration for human life,” Reed said.
Ongoing investigation
