The Mohan Majhi government in Odisha has decided to recommend a CBI probe into a massive recruitment scam in which hundreds of aspirants were allegedly instructed on selective questions – an unfair way of securing government jobs – in return for millions of rupees.
The decision came days after the state police’s crime branch arrested four accused in the case.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Mr. Majhi on Wednesday handed over the probe to the CBI as serious allegations of widespread irregularities and corruption surfaced in the Odisha police sub-inspector recruitment exams.
“The investigation was initially handed over to the crime branch. Investigation findings so far suggest that the roots of the scam may extend beyond Odisha to Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and other states. There is also strong suspicion of involvement of inter-state organized crime gangs in the scam,” the statement said.
“In view of this development and to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation that will expose the entire network behind corruption and bring all the culprits to justice with exemplary punishment, the Chief Minister has decided to hand over the investigation to the CBI,” the CMO said.
Additionally, the state government is considering setting up a standing commission to oversee the recruitment of personnel for the police and other uniformed services.
The matter came to light when the Berhampur police arrested 114 aspirants who were bussed to Andhra Pradesh to get the leaked question papers of the upcoming Combined Police Service Examination (CPSE) 2024.
