The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has approved a new Green Skill Development Program (GSDP) course aimed at adding value to water hyacinth.
The course titled “Water Hyacinth (Value Added Products) Entrepreneur” has been developed in accordance with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) and the guidelines of the National Skills Development Agency and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. It will be offered in Kerala through KSCSTE – Malabar Botanical Garden & Institute for Plant Sciences in Kozhikode.
According to a press release, the 390-hour residential program combines theory, hands-on training and on-the-job exposure to equip young people with employable skills and promote self-employment through environmentally sustainable businesses.
The course was designed based on interactions between MEFCC officials and researchers working on water hyacinth management in the state. It was developed by a multidisciplinary team led by prof. G. Nagendra Prabhu along with experts from the Center for Environmental Information Awareness Capacity Building and Livelihood Program (EIACP) based at the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE).
