The ₹715 crore modernization of the Secunderabad railway station is progressing well, with the southern block near the Bhoiguda entrance expected to be completed within the next four months. Other components of the project, including the main entrance on the north side and the shelter above the platforms, will be opened in phases over the next 13 months, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy said on Monday.
“The entire project is scheduled to be completed by December 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the renovated facility which will be able to handle 2.7 million passengers per day, up from the current 1.97 million and 32,500 passengers per hour, compared to the current 23,000,” the minister said at a press conference with the top SCR South official.
Calling it an uphill task to carry out the work without disrupting signals, tracks or train services, Mr. Reddy said the new footpaths will connect the station to the metro rail stations on both sides and also to the bus stand, so that passengers will not have to cross roads. He urged the state government to speed up road widening work near the main entrance to facilitate access.
The project also includes the construction of four-legged flyovers and a two-storey hall spread over three acres. This area will house a waiting area for 3,000 passengers, along with cafes, restaurants, retail and other amenities. Rainwater harvesting pits with a capacity of 3.5 million liters are being built to ensure that not even a drop of rainwater goes to waste, he explained.
Mr. Reddy noted that Telangana has been allocated ₹ 5,337 crore for railway development this year. Over the past ten years, the state has commissioned 346 km of new lines and 487 km of doubling, tripling and quadrupling. A record 1,959 km of track has been electrified, which is close to 100% coverage.
In addition, 293 road underbridges, 43 road bridges and 49 pedestrian bridges were built. Completed works are valued at ₹31,000 crore, with ongoing projects costing ₹42,219 crore.
SCR Additional Director General Satya Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager R. Gopalakrishnan and Chief Administrative Officer Ranadheer Reddy were present.
