Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president MH Jawahirullah on Sunday said the party wants to contest five assembly seats as part of the DMK-led alliance. He also urged other alliance partners to give more representation to Muslims while distributing tickets to candidates. The MMK contested two assembly seats – Manapparai and Papanasam – in 2021 and won both as part of the DMK alliance.

Speaking to reporters after the party’s special general body meeting in Chennai, Mr. Jawahirullah said the “power share” demand consistently raised by the Congress party in Tamil Nadu “will not apply to Tamil Nadu”.

“We have also (at the EGM) decided to seek five Assembly constituencies for the MMK as part of the DMK alliance,” he said, appealing to the MMK cadre to ensure the installation of a “Dravidian model 2.0” government in Tamil Nadu.

“The present government must continue and the Dravidian model 2.0 must blossom in Tamil Nadu. The DMK government has fulfilled many of our long-standing demands: Chief Minister MK Stalin met the minority communities – Christians and Muslims – at the Secretariat and took a number of steps to address their problems. Minority students were given an education loan of ₹ 5,000 lakh and Muslim teachers and teachers working in the Graveard minority were recognition was given. the mandate to obtain a ‘no objection certificate’ for building mosques and churches was abolished,” he said.

Mr. Jawahirullah added, “At a time when Muslim representation (in Parliament and Assemblies) has decreased in India, the political parties in the alliance should give adequate representation to Muslims.”
