MLA seeks probe into Thrissur police vehicle accident, compensation to victims
Communist Party of India (CPI) MLA and former minister K. Rajan urged Home Minister Ramesh Chennithal to order a comprehensive inquiry into the police vehicle accident in Aloor that claimed the life of a school student and another seriously injured, besides providing immediate compensation to their families.
In a letter to the Home Secretary, Mr. Rajan has sought adequate financial assistance for the family of the deceased student Juvin Raj (16) and the family of Anantha, who is undergoing treatment. He also demanded that the state government should bear the entire cost of Ananth’s treatment.
The accident took place on June 15 when Juvin Raj and Ananthu, both residents of Aloor, were returning home from school on an electric scooter. The scooter was reportedly hit by a Kerala Police vehicle on the Potta-Irinjalakuda road while the students were taking a right turn towards Aanathadam Road.
Citing eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage and physical evidence at the scene of the accident, Mr Rajan claimed that another vehicle following the students had slowed down to allow them to turn, but a police vehicle, allegedly traveling at high speed, overtook that vehicle and hit the scooter.
“No license”
The MLA also alleged that the police vehicle did not have a valid certificate of fitness and alleged that the tire tracks at the spot indicated braking on only one wheel. He further alleged that the vehicle was traveling at excessive speed from the Chalakudy exit and that there was serious misconduct on the part of the police in providing an ambulance immediately after the accident.
Juvin Raj succumbed to his injuries on June 23 while undergoing treatment. Ananthu remains in intensive care. Mr. Rajan pointed out that the FIR registered by the Aloor police attributed the accident to the negligence of the police driver.
Organ donation
Referring to Juvin Raj’s organ donation in which seven people received life-saving organs after his death, Mr. Rajan said the student and his family had set an exemplary model for the society. He questioned whether the government had provided the bereaved with adequate support despite their humanitarian gesture.
The MLA called for a thorough investigation into the incident, strict legal action against those responsible, immediate compensation for both families and full government support for the continued medical care of the injured student.
