The new Sairang railway station is expected to develop the economy of tourism and strengthen the economy in Mizorama. Many in the state hope that more tourists from AP and other southern states will visit northeast. Sairang will connect Aizawl, the capital of Mizorama, with Bairabi, Silchar and Guwahati, said the northeast border railway officials.
The railway connection will be opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi 13. September. The 51 km project was built at the price of about 8,000 crore for eleven years, the railway officers said.
“The new railway line between Bairabi and Sairang in Mizoram is developing tourism and generating a job in the tribal belt,” said Sampuwei, resident Aizawl. “We depend on forests and valleys, where there are a lot of bamboo groves and banana plantations. The tribal women collect forest production and sell in local Shandy,” said Marcus, trade breeder.
Tourists from Telangana, Keraly, Tamil Nadu and Odisha visit Mizoram. With the new railway line, which was laid in Sairang, more tourists from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu can visit the northeast, said Lalsanhima, a taxi driver.
“The main occupation in Mizoram is agriculture. We cultivate unpeeled and some gardening crops. Now we expect more jobs in the tourism industry because our district was connected to the main railway line. There are many tourist sites in Mizoram.”
It would now be easier for residents to transport vegetables, meat, other essentials and building materials from Silchar and other places, Sangpui, a student, said.
People from Mizoram go to Guwahati or Silchar by flying by spending about 10,000 ₹ or on a road that lasts about eight hours. “Now, by train, we can go to Guwahati in three hours, Simon, a civilian supplier in Aizawl, said.
