Mitchell Marsh sent a flaming warning to the cricketing world ahead of the T20 World Cup when he smashed a sensational 102 off just 58 balls against the Hobart Hurricanes in the 19th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) in Hobart on January 1 at Bellerive Oval.
His explosive innings, the fastest T20 century of his career, highlighted why he is considered a dangerous prospect for the upcoming global tournament. Marsh knocked on the same day Australia have announced their 15-man squad for the World Cup.
Marsh raced to his fifty in just 33 balls and once he crossed the milestone, he got even faster. Targeting Mitchell Owen in the 14th over, he smashed 4, 6, 6, 4, displaying his full repertoire of power shots and giving the Scorchers the much needed boost.
Along the way, he also reached the milestone of 2,000 runs in the BBL, cementing his place among the competition’s elite performers. His commanding innings set the tone for the Perth Scorchers who finished with an impressive total of 229/3 in their 20 overs.
Aaron Hardie played a stellar supporting role, scoring 94 off 43 balls, including nine fours and five sixes, while Finn Allen’s quick 16 and Cooper Connolly’s short 4 added early momentum. The Hurricanes struggled to contain the firepower of the Scorchers, with Chris Jordan conceding 41 runs and Riley Meredith escaping with 61 in his allotted overs.
Marsh’s timing couldn’t have been better as Australia prepares for the T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7. Australia will open their campaign against Ireland on February 11 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
They are drawn in Group B alongside Oman, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. With Marsh in such electrifying form, Australia go into the tournament with confidence and a clear lead at the crease.
