A professor at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was fatally shot Monday at his home in Brookline, Norfolk County.
According to a report by The Boston Globe, which cited police, the incident came to light shortly after 8:30 p.m. Monday when police responded to calls reporting shots fired in the area of Gibbs Street.
When officers arrived in the area, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The man, identified as Professor Nuno FG Loureiro, was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning.
“Sadly, I can confirm that Professor Nuno Loureiro, who died early this morning, was a current MIT faculty member in the Departments of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Physics, as well as Director of the Center for Plasma Science and Fusion at MIT,” the publication quoted MIT spokeswoman Kimberly Allen as saying.
MIT also expressed its “deepest condolences” to Loureiro’s family, students and colleagues.
The U.S. Embassy in Lisbon offered condolences, and U.S. Ambassador to Portugal John J. Arrigo wrote, “My deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Nun Loureira, who led the Center for Plasma Science and Fusion at MIT. We honor his life, his leadership in science, and his lasting contributions.”

Who Was MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro?
A graduate of the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon and a PhD in Physics from Imperial College London, Loureiro received the 2015 Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contribution to Plasma Physics Research (American Physical Society).
A year later, in 2016, he joined MIT as a faculty member and was named Herman Feshbach (1942) Professor of Physics as well as Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering.
Throughout his career at MIT, Loureiro received several other awards for academic achievement, and in 2024, in recognition of his contributions to the field, he was named director of the MIT Center for Plasma Science and Fusion, one of the institute’s largest laboratories.

Loureiro’s research interests are mostly related to advancing the understanding of plasma behavior and nuclear fusion.
“He is recognized for advancing the understanding of many aspects of plasma behavior, particularly turbulence and the physics underlying solar flares and other astronomical phenomena,” MIT wrote in 2024, announcing the confirmation of its lab director.
“In the field of fusion, his work makes it possible to design fusion devices that can more effectively control and use the energy of fusion plasma, bringing the dream of clean, almost unlimited fusion energy that much closer,” the institute added.
