Quick Scores: Rajasthan Royals (228/4) beat Punjab Kings (222/4) by 6 wickets at Mullanpur Stadium, Chandigarh.
Stop counting. Punjab Kings have been beaten in the Indian Premier League! Playing at home, Punjab Kings had a terrible day with the ball against Rajasthan Royals, ending in a 6-wicket loss at the Mullanpur Stadium on Tuesday.
Rajasthan openers Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey played their most impressive knocks in the IPL so far, adding 77 runs in a tricky 223-run chase. They survived the tough mid overs, dug into their crease and then crushed the fast bowlers in the death overs, giving Rajasthan a clinical victory.
It is very important that we repeat the clinical part here. Because last season one of Rajasthan’s biggest downfalls was the lack of finishing. They would stay in the lead for most of the time only to lose it in the last two overs.
On Tuesday, it looked like the story would follow the same path. After batting well in the middle overs, Rajasthan threw it away. Jofra Archer and Brijesh Sharma lost the plot in the last two overs conceding a total of 43 runs. Marcus Stoinis raced to 62 off just 22 balls to guide Punjab to a mammoth total of 222 runs.
Giving away momentum against Punjab Kings has not gone well for any team in this IPL. Shreyas Iyer’s side have grabbed even the tiniest of chances and punished the opposition this season.
But that baggage didn’t play on Rajasthan’s mind today as they got out of the blocks in sensational fashion and scored 84 runs in the over. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is improving every day, was bowled out for 43 in just 16 balls before mistaking a full toss with Shreyas Iyer at mid-wicket.
Rajasthan lost their breath after the powerplay as spinners Harpreet Brar and Yuzvendra Chahal slowed the game down.
Between the 6th and 14th overs, Chahal took three crucial wickets of Jaiswal (51 off 27), Dhruv Jurel (16 off 20) and Riyan Parag (29 off 16), all off misfires, handing control of the game to Punjab.
And once again, Rajasthan looked set to throw it all away despite building the platform well.
However, South African Donovan Ferreira and Impact Sub Shubham Dubey combined to form an important fifth wicket partnership to take the team over the line in Mullanpur on Tuesday.

Ferreira, who was let go by the Delhi Capitals a season ago, is showing signs of a breakout year this season. His shooting arsenal was on display today as he not only dug his claws in to survive the middle overs but then had the mentality and physicality to hit sixes that should have trapped him on the boundary line.
Ferreira’s 52* off 26 was well supported by Shubham Dubey, who has been around the IPL circuit for a couple of years but is yet to really light it up. But against Punjab, Dubey was able to guide the yorker balls to the boundary and hit two powerful sixes while remaining unbeaten on 31 off just 12 balls.
The duo added 77 off just 32, finishing the job in 19.2 overs, guiding Rajasthan to a strong win against Punjab.
With the win, Rajasthan climbed to the third position in the league table with 9 points from 12 matches.
Despite the loss, Punjab are still at the top of the table with 13 points from 8 matches.
