Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott has confirmed that any misunderstandings between him and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) have now been resolved, ensuring smooth coordination as the team prepares for the T20I series against Zimbabwe from October 29 in Harare.
Trott’s remarks follow earlier concerns about lack of communication regarding squad selection and engagement with ACB officials, which he says have now been resolved. The clarification comes at a crucial time for Afghanistan, who are looking to regain momentum after a disappointing Asia Cup campaign and a Test series defeat, with the T20 World Cup looming on the horizon.
Trott acknowledged that communication problems had previously caused tension, but stressed that all parties were now on the same page. “We had a good discussion – the ACB, myself and all the stakeholders and senior management – and we came to an agreement on how to move forward. I think that has been resolved and any misunderstandings or misunderstandings have been resolved,” Trott told reporters ahead of the series in Harare.
Trott highlighted the renewed sense of unity in the camp, adding: “Communication is now in place and we are all working together, building a strong Zimbabwe side and looking beyond the T20 World Cup to the subcontinent.”
Trott went on to say that recent discussions have been productive and beneficial.
“I think sometimes these discussions are healthy because you realize where things can be improved on both sides. The communication over the last few days has been great – I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to the next few months,” he said.
While ACB officials have expressed their intention to retain Trott as head coach beyond the T20 World Cup, the former England international remains focused on immediate priorities. He confirmed his commitment until the end of the 2026 World Cup and outlined his vision for the team.
“It’s been a good discussion over the last few days. I’m signed until the end of the 2026 World Cup and I’m obviously excited about the future and the next few months. We were disappointed with how the Asian Cup went but we’ve got to bounce back – the boys have been training well,” Trott said, adding that the team is focused on building momentum to get Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka into the World Cup.
Under Trott’s leadership, Afghanistan have made significant progress in recent years, including their first ever appearance in the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup and series wins against South Africa and Bangladesh.
With an eye on the immediate challenge, Trott outlined the team’s short-term goal. “We are here to win and to build as much momentum as possible in the final months before the World Cup,” he said. Afghanistan will face Zimbabwe on October 29, 31 and November 3, using the three-match series as a platform to regain form and confidence.
