
A multi-vehicle collision, possibly due to brake failure, crushed a car between two trucks and knocked down another in a chain reaction in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district. The accident killed 11 people, including children, police said Thursday.
The collision took place on the road descending from Dramandganj valley towards Lasoda area. It was reported around 8:30 pm on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik told PTI.
According to her, teams of police and firemen rushed to the spot and started rescue operations with the help of local residents.
How did the Mirzapur accident happen?
Citing preliminary findings, PTI said the truck traveling downhill is suspected to have suffered brake failure.
He hit another truck in front of him. A passenger car driving between two trucks was crushed in the impact. A chain reaction ensued; another vehicle was hit and caught fire.
“Due to brake failure, the truck collided with another truck. An Alto got stuck between the two trucks and another Bolero hit it and caught fire,” Kaushik said.
Immediately after the accident was reported, rescue and relief work was started. Police teams along with local residents were pulling out the victims trapped in the damaged vehicles.
“11 deaths have been reported so far and efforts are on to ascertain the identity of all the victims,” the SP said earlier.
According to officials, the accident involved a vehicle:
- Truck with Bihar registration plate
- Another truck registered in Madhya Pradesh
- Sonbhadra district car
- Car from Mirzapur
About victims
District Magistrate Pawan Gangwar told PTI that seven of those killed were residents of Mirzapur district, three were from Madhya Pradesh and one victim was from neighboring Sonbhadra.
The deceased from Jigna area of Mirzapur have been identified as:
- Shiva Singh (8)
- Sonam Singh (9)
- Piyush Singh (14)
- Pankaj Singh (40)
- Vandana Singh (43)
- Vishnu Singh (45)
- Veena Singh (47)
Others who died in the accident included:
All the bodies have been sent to the mortuary and the families of the victims have been informed, Gangwar said. There is no law and order problem in the place, he added.
Officers remain deployed in the area while efforts are underway to restore normal traffic to the affected section.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the multi-vehicle collision. Further details are awaited.
