Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a record surge

Star weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu gave India its first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after winning the women’s 48kg title in Glasgow on Sunday.The 31-year-old lifted a Commonwealth Games record 85kg in the clean and jerk before recording a Games record 105kg in the clean and jerk. She finished with a total lift of 190 kg and won the gold medal.The win gave Mirabai her third Commonwealth Games gold medal in a row, having also won the title at the Gold Coast 2018 and 2022 Games in Birmingham.The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist earlier won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, also held in Glasgow.Mirabai was in control of the contest from start to finish.

She finished 22kg ahead of Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who won the silver medal with a total lift of 168kg.Her campaign got off to a rocky start when she failed her opening attempt at 82kg. However, she recovered during further attempts at the record lift of 85 kg.After taking an eight-kilogram lead in the throw as a result of her record-breaking catch, the Manipur lifter dropped the bar in her first attempt at the throw but responded in champion fashion by lifting 105 kg in her second attempt to clinch the gold medal long before the end of the competition.The lift not only secured the gold, but also broke the Commonwealth Games record in the clean and jerk category and improved the lift’s overall mark.With the title already secured, Mirabai did not attempt her third clean and jerk lift, with the Asian Games set to begin in less than two months.
