Minor girl kidnapped, sexually assaulted by two in Coimbatore; the police shot one accused in the leg

Police on Sunday (September 13, 2026) arrested two persons who allegedly kidnapped a 14-year-old girl and sexually assaulted her at a house in Coimbatore on Saturday (September 12, 2026). Police shot one of the accused in the leg after he allegedly attacked a policewoman with a sickle.

According to police, Santhosh (24) of Mettur near Vellalore and Thavasi (28) of Kanjikonampalayam, both daily wage labourers, abducted the minor girl on a two-wheeler on Saturday night. They took her to Thavasi’s house in Kanjikonampalayam and sexually assaulted her before releasing her.

The girl returned to her residence and filed a complaint at the All Women Police Station, Coimbatore South, along with her parents around 7:30 p.m. The survivor was counseled and taken to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for medical examination.

The police registered a case under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and started an investigation. They arrested Santhosh and Thavasi on Sunday after analyzing CCTV footage and other evidence.

During interrogation, Thavasi told the police that a sickle was hidden in the cemetery in the locality, with which the minor girl was allegedly threatened while committing the crime. A police team led by Inspector I Sornavalli took Thavasi to the graveyard to recover the weapon. Police said the accused picked up a hidden sickle and assaulted the inspector, causing an injury on her shoulder.

According to the police, Thavasi tried to escape and tried to assault the inspector further, after which Sub-Inspector Silambarasan shot him in the leg with his service pistol. He was taken to CMCH for treatment. Ms. Sornavalli, who was also hospitalized, is recovering.
