
The death toll from acute kidney failure reached 11 on Sunday (March 8) after 73-year-old Senapathi Ramalaxmi died while undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital in Rajamahendravaram town.
Ms Ramalakshmi, originally from Laalacheruvu area, was admitted to the hospital with acute kidney failure on February 16, a day after she allegedly consumed milk adulterated with ‘ethylene glycol’.
In an official statement issued on March 7, East Godavari District Collector Kirthi Chekuri said, “As many as 20 persons suffered acute kidney failure after consuming milk adulterated with ethylene glycol in Rajamahendravaram town”.
Nine people, including three infants, are still fighting for their lives with acute kidney failure. The state government offers free medical treatment to patients.
