
The death toll due to consumption of milk adulterated with ethylene glycol rose to 15 on Friday morning after two survivors died while receiving medical treatment at two separate hospitals in Rajamahendravaram town.
Two individuals died within three hours of acute kidney failure, a condition associated with consumption of milk adulterated with ethylene glycol. In a published health bulletin, East Godavari District Medical Officer and Health Officer Dr. K. Venkateswara Rao; “Two survivors, Reddy Anantha Lakshmi (55) and Kadali Krishna Rao (73), died of acute kidney failure on Friday. As of today, five more survivors are fighting for their lives with acute kidney failure.”
At least 20 people, including three infants, suffered acute kidney failure after allegedly consuming milk supplied by the same vendor on February 15 and 16. An investigation by the Vijayawada Regional Forensic Laboratory confirmed in its report that the milk was adulterated with ethylene glycol.
Meanwhile, the state government is providing free medical care to all survivors in private hospitals. It has also deployed a team of experts from Hyderabad.
