Mike Hussey takes on Australia’s expanded role ahead of the Ashes, the 2027 FIFA World Cup
Former Australian batsman Mike Hussey will take on an expanded role with the national team, serving as a consultant coach ahead of the 2027 Ashes and ICC Cricket World Cups. He will also work as a T20 consultant in Australia’s preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next cycle of the T20 World Cup.
Hussey’s appointment comes with Australia facing a busy international calendar across formats over the next two years. He will provide coaching assistance during the upcoming T20I series against England and work with the squad ahead of the Test series against New Zealand before taking on wider responsibilities for the major tournaments in 2027 and 2028.
In a statement released by Cricket Australia, Hussey said he was looking forward to becoming a more involved part of the national set-up. He also expressed his hope to contribute to a team that has seen considerable success in recent years.
“I am extremely excited to be part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” Hussey said.
Cricket Australia general manager of national teams Ben Oliver welcomed the expanded set-up and highlighted Hussey’s international experience and understanding of the domestic game. Head coach Andrew McDonald also backed the appointment, pointing to the former batsman’s knowledge across formats and his ability to complement the existing coaching group.
“We are delighted that Mike is expanding his role in the team. Mike brings considerable international experience having represented Australia over 300 times during his illustrious playing career,” said Oliver.
HUSSEY WILL BRING T20 EXPERTISE
Hussey’s advisory responsibilities in the shortest format will include campaign planning, opposition analysis, player scouting and performance support. With Australia’s Test commitments expected to keep the coaching staff busy in the coming months, his role will provide added focus to the T20 set-up as the team builds towards the Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup.
The former left-hander played more than 300 international matches for Australia across formats and earned the nickname ‘Mr Cricket’ during his playing career. After retirement, he built a coaching portfolio spanning international cricket, IPL and The Hundred. He was also part of England’s coaching set-up during their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph.
Hussey has previously worked with the Australian team over recent years, so the expanded position is a continuation of the existing association. McDonald said his experience as both a player and a coach would be valuable to the group, while praising his personal qualities.
Hussey will begin his expanded role during Australia’s T20I series against England later this month.
