The large community of migrant workers from Murshidabad in West Bengal, which is in the throat of violence over protests against the WAQF Act (amendment), in Perumbavoor and adjacent areas maintains a close card on the event turnover at home, even though they took a false intelligence factory.
According to a study conducted by the Center for Migration and Inclusive Development (CMID), Murshidabad migrants represent approximately 30% of the community of migrating workers in the Ernacula district. Three of each four workers from Bengal, 75% in Ernacula, come from Murshidabad.
However, there were no panic among the community, although they remain at Tenterhooks about events at home. “We have not noticed any tendency to return home among the workers from Bengal,” said Mujeeb Rahman from the Sawmill and Plywood owners.
The Plywood Industry and Construction remain among the main sectors in which migrant workers from West Bengal are mostly involved in perumbavocies and nearby areas. Ka Mohanan, a local supplier, said Muslims are likely to return among migrant workers in June for the festive season. Otherwise, workers seemed largely disturbed by what was happening at home, he added.
Migrants who have moved here with their families can worry about the fate of their extended families, including parents, in the case of any unrest at home. Benoy Peter, Executive Director of CMID, noted that any challenges from religious heads for mobilization in the face of tension can cause exodus. “Any restless broadcasting can also be the cause of anxiety for migrants here. Because migrants remain largely connected, thanks to the penetration of mobile phones, they are also bombarded with fake messages, although they seem to see it,” he said.
George Mathew, a coordinator of the progressive organization of workers who has been in Murshidabad several times, said that political violence is not new in this area. “This time the feedback I get this time seems to be more common with the stripes of xenophobic sentiment against Muslims. The broadcast range is now also not common,” he added.
