Migrant workers robbed at knifepoint near Electronics City; cash, looted phones

Four migrant workers from West Bengal were allegedly robbed at knifepoint by a group of unidentified men near Bettadasanapura in Electronics City police station limits on Sunday evening.

According to the complaint filed by Sabir Shaik, 20, he and his friends — Yunus, 25, Irfan Shaik, 19 and Owaidur Islam Laskar, 18 — have been living in Bengaluru for the past eight months and are working under a contractor.

On June 28, around 6:30 p.m., four friends were sitting and chatting near Bettadasanapura after returning from work. While Sabir was talking on his mobile phone, three unknown men approached him saying that his friends were calling them. When Sabir denied knowing them, the men allegedly asked him to show photos of his friends on his phone.

After seeing the photographs, the suspects allegedly took Sabir’s mobile phone and walked towards the back of a nearby temple. When Sabir followed them and demanded his phone back, his friends reached the spot.

The defendant allegedly threatened the group with a knife, a wooden stick and an iron rod, assaulted the two victims and demanded money. They allegedly took away ₹10,000 in cash, four mobile phones and SIM cards of the victims.

The complainant further alleged that the accused forced him to unlock his online payment account and transfer ₹488 from his account to another account before fleeing. They also allegedly threatened the victims with further violence if they informed the police.

The victims later informed their employer and contacted the police.

The Electronics City police have registered a case under section 309(6) (robbery) and 311 (robbery or theft with attempt to cause death or grievous bodily harm) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and have launched a search to identify and arrest the accused.
