Analysis of water samples on the part of the Committee established by the Ceral Pollution Council found that microplastic contamination appeared in the Periyar River along the Edayar Industrial Region.
The panel, which was created to assess the impact of plastic dumping, now disappeared with SERE SAKTHI paper, found microplastic pollution in samples of soil taken from the place and water samples drawn from the river adjacent to the place.
The microplastic contamination in the river near the industrial area of Edayar was detected after the committee decided to collect two other reference samples to comprehensively assess the potential microplastic load due to the waste of the company.
Two samples were tested again – one of the point upstream and the other from the opposite bank of the river. The analysis of these samples showed the presence of microplastics in both samples. The Committee concluded that the presence of microplastics in the river can be from several sources and not only from the site.
The impact of microplastic pollution was analyzed on the basis of a directive issued by the National Green Tribunal, which pulled out a company for unscientific dumping of plastic waste and combustion ashes generated from processes in approximately 81 cents. The order of 29 July 2024 issued by the south bench stated that the proposer of the project left plastic waste in the landfill and later equalized it into the parking lot.
The panel recommended another concrete/equivalent waterfront in the front of the river to prevent any possible surface/under surface water, as the upper surface has already been compacted and converted into a parking space. To perform the required work, it is necessary to solve ownership problems, because the site is now under holding Gram Kadungalloor Panchayat, he said.
