Michigan house fire: 6 children, 2 adults found dead with gunshot wounds after ‘suspicious’ fire engulfs Grand Haven | Today’s news
Recently there was a tragic incident of a house fire in Michigan where eight people were found dead. Among the dead were two adults in their 40s and six children. According to law enforcement officers, some of the victims showed signs of gunshot wounds.
The bodies of the deceased were discovered after police and firefighters were called to a house fire in Grand Haven Township on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, the AP reported. Emergency calls first alerted authorities to the smell of smoke around 8:30 a.m. on July 24, after which firefighters rushed to Riverside Trail in the area of 148th Avenue and Mercury Drive in Grand Haven Township. When the firefighters could not trace any fire, they left.
Authorities were alerted again a few hours later around 11:40 a.m. when a report of smoke billowing from a home on Riverside Trail was received. According to traffic records from dispatch, an eyewitness raised concerns about a house “full of smoke” and white smoke coming out of the window.
To put out the fire just before noon, firefighters rushed to the scene where they found lifeless bodies inside the house. Authorities have not yet fully identified all of the victims and do not have an official cause of death, according to Capt. Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
At the evening press conference, Captain Jacob Sparks further mentioned that the ages of the deceased children ranged from 5 to 15 years old. According to the officer, everyone who lived in the house appeared to be dead.
“It’s too early to say it’s a murder-suicide. I can tell you that’s one of the theories we have and we’re still looking to see if we can verify that,” local news station Wood TV quoted Jacob Sparks as saying. A medical examination of the bodies Saturday will reveal the cause of death, the sheriff said.
The Ottawa County Sheriff went on to comment, “I don’t know if other means were used. I do know some had gunshot wounds,” adding, “It would be premature to say what caused their death.” According to Sparks, there was heavy smoke damage to the home, which slowed investigators’ initial response.
Sheriff calls Michigan house fire ‘complicated scene, complicated scene’
Describing the crime scene as a “complicated scene, a complicated scene,” Sparks said investigators were not looking for outside suspects and that one of the theories so far is a murder-suicide. Calling the fire “suspicious”, officials believe it was set deliberately, as indicated by the results of the preliminary investigation. An investigation is ongoing with Michigan State Police arson investigators at the scene looking for evidence.
Notably, Grand Haven Township, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Grand Rapids, has a population of about 18,000.
