Australian hockey great Michael Nobbs, a former national team defender and ex-coach of the Indian men’s team, has died after a long illness at the age of 72. His departure was confirmed by Hockey Australia, who recognized his long-term contribution to the sport in both playing and coaching roles.
Nobbs represented Australia in 76 internationals between 1979 and 1985, scoring once as a reliable defender who started in both full-back and full-back positions. He was part of an era widely regarded as one of the strongest in Australian men’s hockey, earning consistent selection through discipline, fitness and professionalism.
During his international career, Nobbs represented Australia at the 1981 World Cup in Mumbai and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Paying tribute on their website, Hockey Australia described him as “a member of one of the strongest eras in Australian men’s hockey”, saying that he “consistently held his place through hard work, discipline and the trust he earned from teammates and coaches”.
After retiring from international hockey, Nobbs moved into coaching and had a significant impact overseas. He was appointed head coach of the Indian men’s team in 2011 and took charge during a challenging phase for the side after they failed to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. India showed improved form in the qualifying phase under his tenure, but finished last at the 2012 London Olympics, after which Nobbs left the role.
Nobbs also coached in Japan, reflecting his wider commitment to the development of hockey internationally and his standing in the global game.
Hockey Australia said in a statement: “Hockey Australia extends its deepest condolences to Michael’s family, friends, former teammates, players and all those whose lives and careers were shaped by his contribution to hockey. He will be remembered as a proud Kookaburra, a respected professional and servant of the sport.”
Nobbs is survived by his wife Lee Capes, a former Australian international, and their daughter Kaitlin, who currently represents Australia as a member of the Hockeyroos.
