MI begins a rebuild with Mahela Jayawardene’s departure as Rohit Sharma’s captaincy buzz grows

Mumbai Indians are heading for a major reset ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, with Mahela Jayawardene and the franchise mutually agreeing to part ways. The development comes as the five-time champions also face fresh speculation about their leadership, with Rohit Sharma emerging as a possible candidate to return as captain.

Jayawardene’s exit marks the end of another chapter in his long association with the Mumbai Indians, where he has served in several roles over the years. The franchise will now look to chart a new course, while the prospect of Rohit regaining the captaincy has added another layer of intrigue to its plans for next season.

“Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade. The players, the coaching staff, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and most of all the fans have made it an experience I will always cherish,” Mahela said in a statement.

“Mahela has contributed immensely to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us. On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years,” said MI Owner Nita Ambani.

MAHELA MUMBAI LEGACY

Jayawardene’s contribution to Mumbai Indians goes far beyond his last stint as head coach. He first took charge of the franchise in 2017 and led them to three IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020, making him one of the most successful coaches in the history of the tournament.

His understanding of the franchise’s culture and ability to build a consistent team played an important role in Mumbai’s success. After moving into a wider leadership role in 2022, Jayawardene oversaw the franchise’s expanding global cricket operations before returning as head coach for the 2025 season.

His exit now leaves Mumbai with an important decision to make as they prepare for the next IPL campaign. Finding the right coaching structure will be key for a team that has struggled to regain title form in recent seasons.

ROHIT SHARMA CAPTAINCY BUZZ

Rohit’s possible return as captain could become the next major talking point as the Mumbai Indians look to rebuild. India Today had earlier reported that the franchise’s top management is leaning towards handing the responsibility back to its most successful captain for IPL 2027.

Rohit led Mumbai to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. His record remains unbeaten in franchise history, making him an obvious point of reference as Mumbai assess their leadership options.

Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain ahead of IPL 2024 after returning to Mumbai from Gujarat Titans. The change attracted considerable attention, but Mumbai endured a difficult first season under Hardik and finished last in the standings. They bounced back to make the play-offs in 2025, although another IPL title remained elusive from 2020 onwards.

For now, Mumbai’s immediate priority will be to settle their coaching arrangements after Jayawardene’s departure and determine the direction they want to take in IPL 2027. Whether that includes reinstating Rohit as captain or continuing with a different management structure remains to be seen.

The franchise has built its reputation on winning titles and developing a strong team culture. His next set of decisions could prove crucial in determining whether Mumbai can return to the top of the IPL in the coming season
