The CPI(M) on Friday (December 19) expressed dismay over the “dilution” of MGNREGA and slammed the Center for a covert effort to help corporate entities “loot the national wealth”.
At a demonstration near Bapuji Market here, party leaders led by Secretariat Member Kankanal Anjaneyula and District Secretary Sk. Mabu recalled that the then UPA government introduced this regime in 2005 under pressure from leftist parties.
“It is not just about renaming the scheme as ‘Viksit Bharat Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission’ to give a go to the Mahatma’s name, the structural changes in the policy will also hit the poor workers hard,” the leaders said, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “expressed displeasure” over the scheme as early as 2014, immediately after he took over as the Prime Minister.
The scheme not only helped create social assets like water bodies and dams in rural areas but also helped create wealth by improving the purchasing power of the rural people, said District Committee Member V. Balakotaiah.
