Meta announced on Monday the new transparent tool for its social media platform. The company will now start displaying tags that indicate that ads have used artificial intelligence (AI) tools to edit images or videos. The new AI tag will be displayed on all metaplatforms that display ads, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. These tags will be displayed in the three-dot menu next to the post or under the brand name, depending on the extreme usage of AI.
In a newsroom post, the social media giant details the new transparent tool. The company said it started working on these tags last year, but now it is implementing them more clearly so that users can be informed of the digital enhancements displayed.
Meta said the tags will appear on ads created or edited using their internally generated AI tools. However, the company did not mention whether the tag would appear on ads that use third-party AI tools to change content.
These AI tags will appear in either of the two places based on the severity of AI usage (after the three-dot menu or next to the “sponsored” tag). If an ad contains images or videos that have “a lot of edits using Meta’s AI tools”, it can appear anywhere based on the degree and enhancement it has been made. However, if an ad uses AI-generated image to be realistic, it will only be displayed next to the “Sponsored” tab.
Meta’s AI tag will appear as “AI Information” and can be clicked to display additional information. When you tap the label, the bottom paper appears, which explains the details of how to use AI to change content. The page also includes a general description of the generation of AI.
The social media giant added that it plans to share more information about its method of using non-META to generate AD images tagged or edited by AI tools. After consulting with experts, advertisers, policy stakeholders and industry partners, the company will add future transparency tools around AI.
