In a bold move to democratize artificial intelligence, Meta Platforms is accelerating its efforts to deploy AI agents for businesses worldwide, targeting “hundreds of millions” of enterprises, from global corporations to small mom-and-pop shops. This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy to lead the generative AI race while maintaining its commitment to open-source innovation.
Meta’s AI advancements, powered by its Llama large language models (LLMs), have already seen massive adoption, with over 800 million downloads globally. The upcoming release of Llama 4, an open-source AI model, is expected to further fuel the development of AI agents capable of advanced reasoning and action. These agents will go beyond simple prompt responses, enabling businesses to automate tasks, engage customers, and even act as virtual representatives.
Clara Shih, Meta’s Head of Business AI, emphasized the transformative potential of these AI agents in a recent interview with CNBC’s Julia Boorstin. “We’re quickly coming to a place where every business, from the very large to the very small, will have a business agent representing it and acting on its behalf,” Shih said.
Empowering Small Businesses with AI
Meta aims to create equal opportunities for small businesses that lack the resources to establish dedicated AI teams. Shih highlighted the challenges faced by small enterprises, such as coffee shops or online jewelry stores, which often rely on platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp for customer engagement.
“Not every business, especially small businesses, has the ability to hire large AI teams,” Shih explained. “Now, we’re building business AIs so that even they can benefit from all of this innovation.”
Meta’s AI agents are designed to automate repetitive tasks, provide 24/7 customer support, and even help businesses acquire new customers. For instance, a small business using Meta’s platforms could deploy an AI agent to handle customer inquiries, manage orders, and personalize marketing efforts—all while maintaining the brand’s unique voice.
AI’s Role in Consumer and Business Transformation
For consumers, Meta’s AI advancements promise to simplify daily life. Shih envisions AI assistants that can research products, plan trips, and organize social outings—capabilities that rival OpenAI’s recently launched Operator AI.
On the business side, Meta is targeting the 200 million small businesses already using its services. These businesses rely on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram for customer acquisition and engagement. With AI agents, they can now automate redundant tasks, deepen customer relationships, and offer concierge-like services at scale.
Preparing for an AI-Driven Future
As AI continues to evolve, Shih warns that no job or industry will remain untouched. “There isn’t a single job that hasn’t been completely transformed by the internet, mobile, and social media. AI will significantly change every job function across every industry,” she said.
To adapt, Shih advises individuals and companies to embrace AI learning and experimentation. “Just like in 1990, we had to learn email and search. Today, everyone needs to learn AI,” she said.
Meta’s AI tools, including Meta AI, are designed to make this learning process easier. Shih shared her own experience of using AI to break down complex research papers. “You can ask AI to explain things at a fifth-grade or ninth-grade level, and it’ll do it. That’s how I learn many complicated topics,” she explained.
The Road Ahead
Meta’s push to deploy AI agents at scale marks a significant step toward integrating AI into everyday business operations. By making advanced AI tools accessible to businesses of all sizes, Meta is not only driving innovation but also empowering entrepreneurs to compete in an increasingly digital world.
As Shih aptly put it, “AI will change every job function across every industry.” The question is no longer if businesses will adopt AI, but how quickly they can adapt to this transformative technology.
For now, Meta’s vision of a future where every business has an AI agent is closer than ever—and the implications for consumers and enterprises alike are profound.
