(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) Lionel Messi may be leading the race for the Golden Boot and continuing to rewrite World Cup history, but the Argentina captain is not the tournament’s highest-rated attacker after the group stage.Instead, Official FIFA Performance Rankings they put Germany substitute Deniz Undav at the top of the attacking charts and overtook Messi by the narrowest of margins after three extraordinary substitute appearances during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Developed with Aramco under Arsène Wenger, the official FIFA World Cup Player Power Rankings ranks each player’s performance using advanced match data. Outfield players are given a score out of 10 for attack, creativity and defence, while goalkeepers are rated separately for their contribution to the goal and possession. While many expected Messi, Kylian Mbappé or even Harry Kane to take the top spot after the group stage, FIFA’s data instead rewarded efficiency, with Undava’s remarkable impact off the bench proving he finished first.
Deniz Undav tops FIFA’s attacking rankings despite never having started a match
Few players have affected matches so dramatically with such short playing time.Undav has yet to start a match against Germany at the tournament, making just three substitute appearances for a total of just 86 minutes.

Still, these short cameos produced extraordinary numbers. The forward scored three goals and added two assists, averaging one goal every 28.7 minutes and a direct contribution every 17.2 minutes. His outstanding performance was on display during Germany’s emphatic 7-1 win over Curaçao, where he scored once off the bench and registered two assists in just 26 minutes. He followed that up with a dramatic spell against Ivory Coast, including a crucial 94th-minute winner to help Germany secure a 2-1 victory. These performances earned Undavo an attacking rating of 8.36, just ahead of Messi’s 8.34, making him FIFA’s highest-rated attacking player after the group stage, despite never featuring in the starting eleven.
Messi continues to rewrite World Cup history
Despite finishing second in FIFA’s attacking rankings, Messi continues to produce one of the best tournaments of his career. The Argentina captain scored six goals in three group stage matches to take his World Cup tally to 19 and strengthen his position as the tournament’s top scorer heading into the knockout stages.During Argentina’s victory over Jordan, Messi also became the first player in history to score against 13 different countries at the FIFA World Cup.According to Opta, he also became the first ever footballer to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches, further adding to an already unbeatable list of tournament records. His attack rating of 8.34 would normally comfortably top the FIFA rankings, but Undav’s stunning efficiency eventually relegated him to second place.
Mbappé, Vinícius and Dembélé continue their pursuit
France captain Kylian Mbappé is third in the FIFA attacking rankings with a score of 8.13, while Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior is fourth with 7.92 after an excellent group stage.Vinícius finished the opening phase with four goals, scoring in all three matches against Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, becoming the first Brazilian player in 24 years to score in every World Cup group stage match.France winger Ousmane Dembélé climbed to sixth place after putting in one of the decisive performances of the tournament against Norway. His first-half hat-trick, completed in just 32 minutes, made him the first player since Oleg Salenko in 1994 to score a first-half World Cup hat-trick, while also becoming the second-fastest player ever to complete the World Cup treble from the start.Norwegian striker Erling Haaland is also among the front-runners after scoring four goals in his debut World Cup campaign.
The FIFA ranking measures more than goals
Unlike the Golden Boot ranking, FIFA’s official rankings evaluate complete performances rather than just goals scored. The attacking category values the quality of chance, finishing and offensive involvement, while creativity measures passing, chance creation and progression. It also includes defensive contribution to create a bigger picture of a player’s overall impact.Elsewhere in FIFA’s position-specific metrics, France’s Michael Olise leads the creativity rankings with a score of 8.03, Canada’s Luc De Fougerolles is the top-rated defender with a score of 7.38, while Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams occupy the top two goalkeeper positions. With the start of the Round of 32, the battle for the tournament’s individual honors remains open.Messi still leads the race for the Golden Boot with six goals, while Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Vinícius Júnior and Erling Haaland all hit four times. France, Argentina and Mexico are also the only teams to achieve perfect group stage records by winning all three of their matches, ensuring many of the tournament favorites remain firmly in contention.Whether Undav can retain the top spot in FIFA’s statistical rankings without becoming a regular starter now becomes one of the most interesting subplots of the knockout rounds.
