Men’s T20 World Cup is over, Bangladesh is launching another new T20 league

January 2026 was marked by Bangladesh’s decision to boycott the T20 World Cup as they stood firm on their stand of not playing matches on Indian soil due to security concerns. While other teams are involved in the global tournament, Bangladesh have quietly focused on strengthening their own T20 structure.

After the start of the Odommo T20 Cup for cricketers, the country is now gearing up for the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL).

On the evening of Wednesday, February 11, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially announced the launch of the Women’s BPL through a press release. The first edition will feature three teams, with franchises building their squads through a player draft system.

Teams will have the opportunity to sign both local and foreign cricketers. The tournament is scheduled to be held from April 3 to 15 and players like Nigar Sultana Joty, Nahida Akter and Marufa Akter are expected to participate.

BCB Director Rubaba Doula has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Women’s BPL Board of Governors. Board Director nominated by the National Sports Council and also heads the BCB’s Women’s Wing Committee.

WOMEN’S CRICKET IS GROWING MORE AND MORE

The promotion and expansion of women’s cricket is gaining momentum worldwide. India has been hosting the Women’s Premier League for the last few years, significantly boosting the profile of the women’s game. The Australian Women’s Big Bash League has also enjoyed sustained success for several seasons.

Meanwhile, The Hundred features a dedicated women’s competition that runs alongside the men’s tournament. In addition, the New Zealand Women’s Super Smash and the Women’s Caribbean Premier League are also attracting increasing attention, further strengthening the global landscape of women’s cricket.

Bangladesh meanwhile have secured their place in the 2026 T20 Women’s World Cupwhich will be held in England later this year, after an impressive campaign in the Super Six stage of the T20 World Cup Global Qualifier 2026 in Nepal.
