Meet Vozinha: the Cape Verdean goalkeeper who became the second-oldest debutant at the FIFA World Cup

Voice (Image credit: X) NEW DELHI: They say age is just a number and Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha proved exactly that on the biggest stage of all on Monday.The veteran stopper made history by becoming the second-oldest debutant in men’s World Cup history when he started for Cape Verde against 2010 champions Spain in Atlanta.Aged 40, Vozinha showed no signs of being fazed by the event, producing a composed performance in the opening half hour of the contest to keep Spain at bay.

Who is Vozinha?

Known simply as Vozinha, his full name is Josimar Jose Evora Dias. Born in Mindelo, Cape Verde, the goalkeeper has been a key figure in his national team for more than a decade.He made his international debut in 2012 and arrived at the World Cup with 81 caps for Cape Verde.Although this is his first appearance on football’s biggest stage, Vozinha is no stranger to international competition, having represented his country at several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

A long way to the World Cup

Vozinho’s professional career began in 2007 in his homeland at Batuque FC before moving to CS Mindelense.His football journey then led through several countries. He played for Progresso in Angola, Zimbra Chisinau in Moldova, Gil Vicente in Portugal, AEL Limassol in Cyprus and AS Trencin in Slovakia.He currently plays for Chaves in the Portuguese second division.After almost two decades in professional football, the World Cup represents the biggest stage of his career.
