As our oceans become busier with ships and fishing vessels, marine life is increasingly paying a price. But where most see an inevitable problem, a Virginia 6th grader saw an opportunity for science to intervene. Her innovative approach to protecting dolphins from human activity has now earned her national recognition.

Who is Ishanvi Sakharpe?

Ishanvi Sakharpe, a student at Old Donation School in Virginia Beach, has been named the 2026 Virginia State Merit Winner of the prestigious 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Her award-winning project, “Dolphin Guard,” seeks to mitigate the dangers dolphins face in high-traffic waters.

According to the official Young Scientist Lab, which named Sakharpa’s project among its top innovations this year, Dolphin Guard combines classroom science with real-world environmental protection. The basic philosophy of her research is proactive protection.

Rather than reacting after a marine animal has already been harmed by a ship’s propeller or fishing net, the project explores how scientific intervention can identify and reduce these dangers before they turn into fatal encounters.

3M challenge for young scientists

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is the premier national competition for high school students across the United States. To participate, students must submit a short video presentation describing a new invention or scientific solution to solve an everyday problem affecting their community or the world.

According to Young Scientist Lab guidelines, submissions are rigorously judged on several criteria, including creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness, communication skills and overall presentation.

The 2026 iteration of the call opened for applications in January and culminated in the announcement of State Merit winners this June. Sakharpe’s Dolphin Guard stood out among a highly competitive field to capture the state title.

Basics of mathematics and logic

However, Sakharpe’s problem-solving ability goes far beyond environmental science; has a well-documented history of analytical excellence.

Math Kangaroo’s official records highlight her continued success in competitive mathematics over several years. In 2025, she was an important member of ‘The Kangaroo Pi-oneers’, a team representing Old Donation School that secured the National Grade 6 Gold Medal in the Maths Kangaroo Competition. In addition to the team awards, she also placed high in the Math Kangaroo individual national and state rankings.

This strong foundation in competitive mathematics provides an essential lens for her success as a young scientist. The core competencies needed for advanced mathematics—logical reasoning, structured problem solving, and sustained curiosity—are the same cognitive tools needed to develop functional environmental technology.

For Sakharpe, these skills have now been channeled into protecting marine ecosystems and answering a fundamental question: how can technology facilitate a safer coexistence between humans and wildlife?
