Minister of Education of the Union Dharndra Pradhan said on Friday (June 6, 2025) that the media of teaching in the coming years would be primarily in Indian and local languages.
Mr. Pradhan chaired the meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Parliament for the Ministry of Education on “Promotion of Education in Bharatiya Bhasha in Higher Education” in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
During the solution of the meeting Mr. Pradhan emphasized the ministry’s efforts to promote maternal language education and emphasized the importance of integrating “Bharatiya Bhashas” or Indian languages into school and university education.
He appreciated the initiatives of the adoption of university institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), for introducing courses in regional languages, including technical subjects such as engineering. “The priority remains to provide books in Indian languages,” he said.
Mr. Pradhan, emphasized the role of technology, noted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in translating content to help students, especially those from rural or economically weaker backgrounds, understand academic material in their preferred languages. He also mentioned that the ministry has prepared an educational resource – Bhasha Sangam – which allows students to learn 100 sentences in 22 languages.
Minister of School Education Sanjay Kumar informed the committee that 1,369 maternal languages were identified in the country, which were classified into 121 languages. Of these, 22 are listed in the eighth schedule of the Constitution, while 99 other languages, albeit unrecognized, speak more than 10,000 people.
Mr. Kumar also emphasized the emphasis on multilingualism in national educational policy (NEP) 2020 and noted that the recently formulated National Curricular Framework for School Education was developed at its core with multilingualism.

He provided updates to AI -based translation tools, such as Anuvadini and Udaan, and shared information about the constitution of Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti and the introduction of Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Pariyojna, as reported in the 2025 Union budget.
