Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav on Tuesday accused YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of resorting to “signature campaign drama” over the PPP model of developing medical colleges for his political survival.
In a press conference, Mr. Satya Kumar alleged that due to lack of genuine public support, YSRCP leaders are resorting to fabricating signatures.
He said the TDP-led coalition government has decided to run 10 medical colleges on PPP model in public interest to ensure the welfare of students. “But Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy is trying to paint it as privatization and his party leaders are increasing the number of signatures by resorting to fabrications to get public support.
Mr. Satya Kumar argued that PPP is an instrument for wealth creation and transformative development. A parliamentary committee chaired by an MP from the Samajwadi Party supported the PPP in running the medical college. The NITI Aayog, the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Supreme Court have not found any problems with the implementation of the PPP, the minister said.
The minister said YSRCP MPs had misrepresented the PPP as privatization due to their own misunderstanding and welcomed the party’s decision to go to court on the matter.
Pointing to the fact that the PPP model is also being implemented in critical defense projects, he asked why it should not be used in the healthcare sector. “The national highway and the Shamshabad airport in Hyderabad were developed on PPP models decades ago,” he recalled.
The minister claimed that the coalition government had studied the matter before deciding to run the 10 medical colleges under the PPP while retaining ownership rights. He said that Delhi government has also proposed to run 11 medical colleges under PPP and currently 10 states have successfully implemented PPP in education and infrastructure sectors.
