The proposed bus stand project near Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode will soon become a reality and the Kozhikode Corporation will approve the plan in a week or two. Mayor Beena Philip told The Hindu on Monday (October 27) that the plan would be approved by the corporation council in one of the two council meetings scheduled for October 31 or the first week of November.
The last hurdle for the corporation to proceed with the project was removed when the state cabinet revoked a 2014 government order canceling the bus stand project on 21 October 2025.
The foundation stone of the project was laid in 2009. It was designed as a public-private partnership model and is estimated to cost ₹60 crore. In 2003, up to 2.64 acres were identified at the Mavoor Road terminus. However, the project was later shelved. It was eventually canceled in 2014. A Vigilance investigation found missing files about the project and allegations of misappropriation of funds. However, the Kerala High Court, in an order dated 12 October 2023, declared the charges invalid. Following this, the state cabinet decided to cancel the 2014 order.
“Once the corporation approves the plan, we will proceed with the construction as soon as possible. However, the corporation needs to get 60 cents of land owned by the home ministry on lease to complete the project,” said NPC Aboobakker, director of Malabar Infrastructures Ltd (Minfra), the firm that will carry out the work.
Medical College South ward corporation councilor EMSoman said that the construction of Medical College Karanthur Road on the north side of the proposed terminal had to be completed and some drainage had to be re-arranged before the Bus Terminus project could be started.
The proposed terminal will be spread over an area of 5 million square feet. It will include a shopping complex and a cinema and plenty of parking spaces. The revised estimate is ₹200 crore. 60 cents of the home department will be used as parking space for ambulances, taxis and autorickshaws. There is also an overpass from the Institute of Maternal and Child Health for the final bus service.
