MYSURU CITY CORPORATION (MCC) agreed to initiate remedial measures after several projects of civic infrastructure have adversely affected the growth and health of road trees.
This decision is governed by the forest department’s inspection, which emphasized violations in the implementation of pedestrian roads, underground drainage and other basic development work.
The roads where the growth of the tree was influenced due to the lack of a storage space for rainwater percolation includes a section from five light circle to a fountain circle (1.6 km), from the LIC office to the highway circle leading to KR, Diwans Road, Vinoba Road, Irwin Road, Bogadi Road, by Andolan Circle.
According to KN Basavaraju, a representative of forest conservator (territorial), the review of the forest department revealed that the roads were built in eight places without providing the required minimum one meter of space around the trees, which is essential for rainwater percolation and healthy root growth. This lack of space was considered harmful to tree health, he said.
He also referred to the Green Tribunal National Court (NGT) in the Sahil Garg V/S Panjab and others, which requires protective measures for trees during infrastructure development.
DCF said MCC assured that this problem would be remedied first and would take the necessary steps to ensure the introduction of protective measures to secure the city’s city.
Mr. Basavaraja expressed confidence that the measures would help ensure better compliance with environmental standards in future civic work.
