Lewis Hamilton said he wouldn’t mind seeing Max Verstappen from Red Bull to join Mercedes next season. Speculation around Verstappen leaving Red Bull has intensified, especially after the Austrian Grand Prix. Mercedes driver George Russell confirmed during media interaction That some interviews were held between Mercedes Management and the Dutch.
Although Verstappen is on the basis of a contract with Red Bull until 2028, the agreement reportedly includes a clause that allows him to leave soon, unless the team provides a car-free car, a situation that seems relevant this season when it slips out of the title. After finishing fourth at the British Grand Prix, the seven -time world champion and driver Ferrari Lewis Hamilton was asked to support the idea that Verstappen would join his former Mercedes team. In an interview with Sky Sportton, Hamilton said he would recommend this step.
“Of course (I would recommend Mercedes),” Hamilton said.
When Hamilton asked about the controversial final of the 2021 season, he clarified that he had no resentment against Verstappen.
“Max did nothing. He did what he had to do in terms of victory, so I don’t think it would be a problem.”
Hamilton also thought about his previous loyalty to Mercedes and remembered the time Red Bull was released as “just a beverage company”. He admitted that he regrets that he said it and now fully recognizes the achievements of Red Bull.
“It comes from a big team. Many years ago, I asked me that I was such a dying Mercedes at that time, and I remember saying that Red Bull was just a drink company,” Hamilton said.
“And I’ve always regretted it, the truth is that Red Bull was an incredible team. There are so many people that are exceptional. They dominated years.”
Despite his move to Ferrari Hamilton, Mercedes continued to praise and recommended them as a team to join.
“If someone asked me about Mercedes, it is an amazing team with passion, great staff, a great factory, a great environment in which I would of course (recommend),” Hamilton said.
Hamilton closed by saying that Verstappen was a hard competitor, no matter which car was driving.
“Max in any car is a strong opponent. I really don’t think much about it,” Hamilton said.
East Christian Horner from Red Bull In the coming days, it is expected to intensify the shake around the future of Verstappen with the team.
