Four-time world champion Max Verstappen is once again at the center of exit speculation after reports suggested his long-time race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase could leave Red Bull Racing for McLaren at the end of 2027. The potential departure of one of Verstappen’s closest allies has raised new questions about the Dutchman’s long-term future at the team.
The development comes amid a period of significant upheaval at Red Bull, with several high-profile departures already reshaping the team’s structure.
Lambiase has been with Red Bull since 2014 and has served as Verstappen’s race engineer while also holding the role of race team leader throughout his time with the team. According to reports from Dutch outlet De Limburger, the Italo-British engineer has been offered a lucrative deal by McLaren that goes well beyond his current deal, which runs until the end of 2027.
“I told him I’m only working with him. Once he’s done, I’ll stop too,” Verstappen said earlier, stressing the importance of his relationship with Lambiase.
Red Bull has already seen a number of big departures over the past 18 months, including key figures such as Adrian Newey, Jonathan Wheatley, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. These departures contributed to the growing uncertainty around team stability and long-term competitiveness.
VERSTAPPEN’S FUTURE IN FOCUS
“That’s what I’m saying. I think about everything inside this paddock. I’m very happy privately. You’re also waiting for 24 races. This time it’s 22. But normally 24. And then just think, is it worth it? Or do I enjoy being at home more with my family? Do I see more friends when you’re not enjoying your sport?” he told BBC Radio 5 Live, hinting at a possible reconsideration of his future in the sport.
A possible departure from Lambias could prove to be the deciding factor Verstappen’s future at Red Bull. The Dutch driver has already expressed reservations about the upcoming rule changes in Formula 1 set for 2026, which include a 50-50 powertrain split and other technical fixes.
With the internal changes at Red Bull and the evolving dynamics of the sport, speculation continues to abound as to whether Verstappen could be looking for a move elsewhere, or even considering leaving Formula 1 altogether.
