Applications by female teachers seeking maternity leave, childcare leave or a combination of both will be processed and approved by the relevant authority within 15 days, Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa informed the Legislative Council on Monday (March 16).
In a reply to BJP member YM Satish, the minister said that the government is taking steps to ensure that applications related to maternity leave and childcare leave are processed within a fixed time frame. A policy will be formulated to ensure that maternity leave applications are approved within 15 days of submission.
Choice of transfer
He added that female teachers who return to work after maternity leave can seek to be transferred to a place of their choice as part of the counseling. This device will be available until the child reaches the age of five.
The minister said that a new category will also be introduced for maternity transfers. He added that the overall process of teacher transfers in the state would be completed before the start of the academic year.
To ensure that academic activities are not affected, visiting teachers will be appointed during maternity or childcare leave.
Vacancies at PU universities
Responding to another question by BJP member SV Sankanur, the minister said the government will review the filling of teaching vacancies in pre-university (PU) colleges, which have been separated from composite degree colleges. The appointment of lecturers in these institutions will take place according to the workload.
Mr. Bangarappa added that the government is also examining proposals related to the creation of new faculty teaching posts in these colleges. The decision will be taken after reviewing the proposals submitted by the respective managements.
Physical education
The minister clarified that moral education is not taught during physical education, he said that in the proposed recruitment of 15,000 teachers, physical education teachers will have priority. Currently, 3,361 places in primary schools and 1,861 places in secondary schools are unfilled.
