Mary D’Costa, the woman allegedly linked to the postponed wedding of Smriti Mandhana and Palaash Muchhal, says she is being severely harassed online. She claims she received rape threats, hate messages and abusive comments from the fake Instagram accounts.
Mary clarifies that the screenshots of the viral chat are from April and that she has never met Palaash. She also said that she has nothing to do with postponing the wedding.
In her Instagram stories, Mary has posted images of threats that include violent language, racial slurs and insults about her appearance and character. She wrote that she had “no words” for the hate she faced.

The language of the threat reports she apparently received is not appropriate for publication here. Check out this edited version:
“Your marriage is still going on, what’s the problem for you? When we talked to you, why didn’t you show us…what a blow to poor Smriti’s heart to show one night before the wedding. You’ll be so mean when you come to me…”
And here is the translated version:
“If their wedding took place, why was it a problem for you? When he was talking to you, why didn’t you show it then? Why did you break poor Smriti’s heart by revealing everything just one night before the wedding? You will meet me outside… I will teach you such a terrible lesson,” reads one of the messages.

“Why are you causing trouble by sharing old chats from May? If they were married, why are you getting involved in their affairs now? It looks like you’re just doing it for attention. Stop prying into their personal lives and let them move on,” another message said.
Well, of course, this is a watered down version to give context. The original message is too disturbing to read due to its mass offensive and racial nature.
Mary D’Costa
Rumors of Smriti Mandhana and Palash Muchhal’s postponed wedding led to a lot of online speculation and Mary D’Costa became the center of backlash.
The official version says that the wedding was postponed because Smriti Mandhana’s father fell ill. However, Reddit and Instagram soon circulated unverified screenshots that claimed to show private chats between D’Costa and Palash.
Many people then assumed that the cottages were connected to the sudden postponement. In response, D’Costa posted an explanation on Instagram, saying she had never met Palash Muchhal.
“I watch cricket and I adore Smriti Mandhana. I would never hurt another woman like that, which is one of the reasons why I felt the need to be transparent about everything,” says Mary in a message on social media.

“I really didn’t expect this reaction. I had to make my account private because I honestly can’t handle the hate and I didn’t think I’d have to go through all this,” she adds.
LiveMint could not independently verify the authenticity of the Instagram account that posted this message. Mary D’Costa’s identity remains largely unknown.
Social media is behind Mary D’Costa
Social media users were mostly behind Mary D’Costa.
“You saved her whole life so she won’t have to suffer this trauma forever,” wrote one.
“As a man, thank you for saving our queen’s life,” commented another.
Another wrote: “You saved her life! That’s it. Love and more power to you.”
“Obviously the guy is to blame but for some reason it’s always the woman who gets blamed. Crazy,” chimed in another.
