Selector chairman George Bailey opened to Australian introductory partners after the Squad for the World Championship (WTC) was declared on Tuesday. Among those in the group, usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Sam Constas, Nathan McSweeney and Steve Smith opened the launch.
While Khawaja remained on top of the order, he had Smith, Head, Constas and McSweeney as his partners, especially after David Warner left the test cricket in January 2024. Constas and McSweeney opened against India while the head was sent as an opener in the series of two matches against Sri Lanka.
Smith was an immediate choice as an opener after Warner retired, then moved back to the middle order.
“I think this is a role that more people could do than we would probably be recognized. There is a predominant idea (that) is a specialized role, but I think there are opportunities in different times when other boys can do it,” Bailey said.
Constas debuted in a boxing day test against India where he Took an attack on Jasprit Bumhrah. But Bailey said that the 19 -year -old constraint is not yet a “finished product”.
“It is quite clear that it is not a finished product. He’s on the way. He’s a highly talented player. But again, it’s not to compromise his ability to play at the World Championship if required,” Bailey said.
Bailey also came called Marnus Labuschagne as a potential possibility as an introductory partner Khawaja for the clash of the summit. It is advisable to note that Labuschagne has never opened the tabs for Australia in tests.
“I think Marnus could open the launch. Many guys could open the launch, but it certainly doesn’t mean yes,” Bailey added.
The WTC final between Australia and South Africa is scheduled for June 11 at the Lord Cricket stadium.
