The Markapuram police have arrested an individual accused of theft, including stealing gold chains from women and shops, to fund his alcohol addiction and other bad habits. The stolen property, consisting of 83 grams of gold jewelery worth ₹10,000 and ₹30,000 in cash, was recovered from the accused.

The accused has been identified as Gurunadham Brahmayya, 24, of Nallathimmayapalli village, Nandalur mandal, Annamayya district. He allegedly stole a gold chain from a woman while she was sleeping at her house in Papayapalli village, Bestavaripeta mandal, Markapuram district.

According to the police, Gurunadham made a living by traveling from village to village and dealing in plastic. Since his income was not enough to support his family – especially given his drinking and smoking habits – he looked for a way to make more money. He decided to steal the gold chains women wore and made a habit of using the proceeds of these thefts to finance a lavish lifestyle. In the past, he has had theft cases registered against him in Revalli, Mahbubnagar of Telangana as well as Venkatagiri and Dakkili in Tirupati and Sullurpeta in Nellore.

Court proceedings are currently underway in these cases. He was last arrested in connection with the case at Revalli police station and was released from Mahabubnagar jail four months ago. After returning from jail, he settled in Ramayapalli village in Kanigiri mandal.

Along with his brother-in-law Naguluri Nagaraju of Veligandla village, he committed the crimes of snatching a chain in Pedda Ullagallu and Purimetla villages in Mundlamuru mandal and also breaking into a locked shop in Naguluppalapadu mandal.

On instructions from Markapuram SP V. Harshavardhan Raju, a team led by Markapuram DSP U. Nagaraju — comprising Circle Inspector Cumbum K. Mallikarjuna, In-charge SI A. Siva Krishna Reddy of Bestavaripeta and other officers — investigated the case. The team successfully solved the case and nabbed the accused at Konapalli Cross Roads on Thursday (July 9) evening.
