Light to moderate showers occurred at many places over central, Rayalaseema and south coastal Andhra Pradesh on 5 November (Wednesday) under the influence of a low pressure extending from southwest Bay of Bengal to north Kerala through Tamil Nadu at a height of 5.8 km above mean sea level.
In Vijayawada, which recorded 40 mm of rainfall in less than an hour, the stretch of Mahatma Gandhi Road (MG Road) between Auto Nagar and Patamata was waterlogged, making it difficult for motorcyclists to navigate.
As the morning was partly sunny, many commuters were caught in sudden downpours.
According to real-time rainfall data from AP State Development and Planning Society (APSDPS), the maximum daily rainfall was recorded between 8.30 am and 4 pm at B. Cherlopalli of Prakasam district where 65.5 mm of rainfall was recorded. It was followed by Sri Sathya Sai district’s Gandlapenta (45 mm), SPSR Nellore district’s Kandaleru reservoir (40.5 mm) and Vijayawada East (39 mm).
Other places in YSR districts Kadapa, West Godavari, Tirupati, Anantapur received light showers, below 35 mm.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, while there may be no rainfall in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, people can expect light to moderate showers at a few places on November 6 and 7 in south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely in both regions over the next two days.
Dry weather is likely to continue in northern coastal areas from November 9. Parts of South Coast and Rayalaseema are likely to witness light showers at one or two places till November 12.
The AP State Disaster Management Authority has warned people not to take cover under trees as thunderstorms are likely in many places on November 6. Light to moderate rains are likely in Krishna, Prakasam, SPSR Nellore, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, Chittoor and Tirupati districts, according to the bulletin.
