The Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance has issued a government resolution (GR) after a breakthrough in discussions between a group of Cabinet ministers and Manoj Jarang. This development occurred on the fifth day of Jarange’s hungry strikes in Mumbai Azad Maidan, where he demanded a reservation at work and education for the Maratha community in the category of the Civil Code.
Maratha quota: What will the committee do?
“In accordance with the historical links contained in Hyderabad Gazetteer, a reserved control process is carried out to verify documents and determine the capacity of the Marath community for Caste Caste Certificate.
He stated that the panel would consist of a gram of Sevak, Talathi (revenue official) and an assistant to the agricultural official. These members will be responsible for verifying the documents submitted to the Marathy Community and reporting their findings to the competent authority.
“The government’s intention is to provide Kunbi certification to all Marath applicants who can demonstrate their line through official documents, allowing them to benefit from the benefits of reservation,” GR added.
The recent GR outlines that individuals from the Marath community or their ancestors who owned agricultural land before or November 21, 1961 or 21 November 1961, must present historical evidence such as old land records or official excerpts from the register. These documents will serve as the basis for local questions made by designated committees, which according to the report corresponds to the certification accordingly.
The Mahashtra Government has changed the 2012 rules concerning the issue and verification of the caste for planned castes, planned tribes, denotified tribes, nomadic tribes, other back grades and special backward categories in July 2023. A year later, in July 2024, the government issued another resolution that ordered different departments to provide access to old income and land records to help the verification process. The latest GR, issued on Tuesday, expands these measures by introducing committees at the level of villages to streamline the certification process for members of the Maratha community.
In addition, Hyderabad Gazetteer, an order issued in 1918 by the Nizam government of the former Hyderabad, which included today’s marathwad in the middle mahara, classified some groups of marathy like Kunbis. In the Maharashtra, Kunbis falls into the category of other classes (OVC). When the Hyderabad Gazetteer will allow Marathas from the Marathwad region to be recognized as Kunbis, which caused them to be eligible for reservation benefits in education and government employment.
