Armed extremists attacked a village in Ukhrul district on Tuesday (March 24, 2026) for the second consecutive day, local residents said.
The extremists, said to be Nagas, also fired on a group of students who were returning from the adjacent Kangpokpi district after completing their Class 10 board exams. No one was injured in the incident around noon on Tuesday.
“At approximately 7:30 a.m. today (Tuesday), Mongkot Chepu village was again subjected to a coordinated armed attack allegedly by Tangkhul militants, including the use of drone-delivered explosives. An innocent civilian was injured,” the Mongkot Chepu village office said in a statement.
Alleging that the militants had built bunkers around the village, the municipal administration asked the government to dismantle the bunkers.
The municipal office also said that two farmers who were cultivating their fields sustained gunshot injuries when extremists fired at them on Monday (March 23, 2026).
“We are trying to control the situation, but the remoteness of the locations makes the task difficult,” said a district official.
Trouble also broke out in the Kuki-Zo-dominated Churachandpur district after a group of people barged into the residence of Kuki Zo Council Chairman H. Thanglet on Sunday (March 22, 2026) night. Armed men present at his house fired indiscriminate shots to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile, the Kamjong District Administration issued an order on Tuesday (March 24, 2026) asking all gun license holders to deposit their weapons and ammunition at the office of the Superintendent of Police. It was “in the interest of public tranquility and peace,” the order said.
