Two tribal organizations in Manipuro on Saturday (August 2, 2025) expressed concern about the arrest of two persons belonging to the HMAR community in connection with the killing of six Meitei people in the Jiribam district last year and claimed that the accused had no criminal history.
These tribal entities also claimed that the arrest of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Assam Police was “unfounded”.
The HMAR Women Association, based in the Churachandpur district, said in a statement: “It is deeply concerned with any arrest of Thanglienlal Hmar and Lalrosang Hmar Assam Police and NIA.
Thanglielal Hmar, Moinathol Dilkshosh Ghaat in the Assam district of Cachar, was arrested on Thursday (July 31, 2025) by the joint team of the Assam and Nia police. Lalrosang Hmar, coming from the same village, was arrested in the capital of Mizoram Azwal.
The association strongly condemned the arrests and accused NIA of “employment arbitrary and discriminatory tactics”. The organization also demanded the immediate release of two arrested persons.
Another organization Kuki Zo Council claimed that Thanglienal HMAR is a “innocent boatman and has no involvement in a crime”. “It seems that his arrest is arbitrary and unjustified and raises serious concerns about the proper trial and justice in the investigation,” he added.
On the day when these six people were kidnapped in November last year, 10 suspicious militants were killed when meeting with security forces and their bodies were later sent to Assam for postmortal examination. This incident stimulated the existing ethnic conflict between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo, which began to spread to Assam.
The Assam government subsequently increased security arrangements along the border. The Ministry of the Interior transferred the case to NIA in December last year and the central agency identified several individuals for their alleged involvement in killing.
